We all have our own version of the ideal work environment. Some of us require a distraction-free bubble to be productive, whereas others prefer to work in a bustling cafe. There are many factors that contribute to workplace productivity and there have been numerous studies on that very topic, focusing on things like the best time of day to work, how often to take breaks, and even the benefits of looking at cute pictures of cats to boost your performance. For our purposes, we're going to focus on environment. Specifically, your home. We live in a time when more and more of us are unable to "punch out" at the end of the day and leave our work at the office. Whether it's checking emails, staying up late grading papers, or studying for a work-related exam, odds are you'll find yourself having to work in your home at some point. Step 1: Choose which room you will dedicate to work Whether it's a bedroom or home office, you'll want to be consistent with which room serves as your productivity zone. Just as you've trained your body to sleep when your head hits the pillow, you'll need to train your brain to work when you sit down at your desk at home. Step 2: Setting up your desk You won't get much work done if your back aches or if your chair is so comfortable that you're likely to fall asleep in it. Pick a chair that is sturdy and ergonomic, and make sure your screen and keyboard are at a good height so you aren't slouched. Step 3: Setting the mood If you need noise to work, determine what kind of noise will help you stay focused. There are sites like Noisli that let you combine different natural sounds. Pandora radio is free and will play a diverse mix of songs based on what you want to hear, and you can pay a small monthly fee to get rid of the ads. Maybe nature sounds and music are too distracting for you but the sound of silence is even worse. If that's the case you might want to invest in a white noise fan. Step 4: Do some decorating As important as the sound in your environment is what you put in it and how you arrange it. Depending on personal preference, you might want to keep your workplace either minimalistic or homey. You should also consider the lighting of the room. Dimming the lights a bit might save your eyes some strain if you're looking at a computer screen for hours at a time. Generally speaking, people work best in natural lighting (so avoid blue LEDs or harsh fluorescent bulbs). The options are endless and the best way to find out what keeps you productive is to experiment with different set ups. What's most important is that you find what works for you. And remember, this isn't the office; you have the opportunity to design a productivity sanctuary of your design. Why settle for anything other than perfect?

Can you could your entire house clean in just 30 minutes a day? If you let the house cleaning slip It becomes overwhelming. By doing just a little bit every day it will help keep your home neat and clean in no time. Here is a basic plan to keep your home clean in just one half-hour a day.   Start in the Kitchen Getting started right after breakfast may be the perfect time to spend a few minutes tidying up.

  • Clear out and wipe down the sink.
  • Wipe down countertops and stove.
  • Put dirty dishes immediately into the dishwasher.
  • Run a quick wet mop over the floor.
  • Take a moment to fold and put your dish towels away.
  • Tackle the Bathroom After your shower while you are still in the bathroom do a quick clean.
  • Swipe out the sink bowl and faucet handles. If you use a premoistened cloth to wipe your face, use it for this too.
  • Clean splatters off the mirror. Use the same cloth you used on the sink.
  • Wipe the toilet seat and rim using the same cloth. Just do the toilet last.
  • Swoosh the toilet bowl with a brush.
  • Before getting out of the shower squeegee the shower door.
  • Spray the shower and curtain liner with a shower mist.
  • Bedroom Once your back in your bedroom to get dressed for the day, you can make a quick round there too.
  • Make your bed.
  • Fold or hang clothes.
  • Straighten out the night-table surface, remove any glasses or dishes.
  • Living Room Get the heart of your home in order in a jiffy.
  • Tidy the sofa.
  • Use a microfiber cloth to pick up dust.
  • Straighten coffee table and remotes
  • Doing these simple tasks will save you much more time in the end and allow you to enjoy your clean home every day.

    Clutter often takes many years to accumulate and will take some time to eliminate. Just remember that de-cluttering is an ongoing lifestyle not a finite project. Many people feel overwhelmed and fear just the thought of de-cluttering the home. It doesn’t have to be that excruciating, there are actually some creative ways to get started. Getting started can be the hardest part. You have to begin your war against clutter one draw or cabinet at a time. Just pick one area of the house and focus on that. It is best to start a de-cluttering session by designating one hour a day to it. If that still seems over whelming for you, start with five minutes a day. You will be surprised what you can accomplish in the clutter war in just five minutes. Remember that any type of progress is better than none. The important thing is to make sure to stick with it each day, or even every other day. Avoid planning an all day de-cluttering session that involves your whole house, as you will never get around to it. Donate or dispose of items you no longer have any use for. Look at items that you feel an attachment to and ask yourself the following three questions: Do I love it? Will I have a need for it again within 3 months? Will I miss it if I throw it away? If you answered no to the questions then you can safely dispose of the item. If you answered a definite yes to these questions, take those items and put them into an organizational bin. Once the bin is full place it in an out of way place in your home and revisit it in about 6 months. If you were able to go that long without needing anything from the bin, chances are it is time to donate or dispose of the items. Don’t forget charitable donations to the Salvation Army and Goodwill, etc. are tax deductible. Probably one of the best ways to let your junk go is to watch an episode of Hoarders on television.

If you are looking to add value to your home without breaking the bank there are many projects that will increase your home's value for less than $1,000. One thousand dollars can go a long way when it comes to home improvement projects. If you think and plan smart your profit should outweigh your investment. Here are a few projects that will give you the most bang for your buck. 1. Organize Your Home Declutter your home by organizing closets, cabinets and pantries. Add bookshelves for more storage. No more Bathroom Blues Bathrooms can be one of the most expensive updates in a home. You can give a bathroom a quick facelift by replacing old tile. Vinyl tiles are inexpensive and easy to install or with ceramic tile can cost as little as $3 per square foot for material and installation.

    sixteen girls being fed upWinter can leave everyone feeling a little stir-crazy.  If you find yourself battling a case of cabin fever, then consider these helpful hints to set your mind at ease. 1.  Invest in some board games.  They've come a long way since the days of checkers and chess.  Check out your local toy store, and drop some cash on these tried and true ways to pass the time.  Not only are they good for family time, but they can also be a lifesaver if you find yourself hosting a get-together gone stale. 2.  Get organized.  Spring cleaning is fine, but winter organizing can make your life a lot simpler, while providing you with something to break the monotony.  Go from room to room, and clean from top to bottom.  Organize those junk drawers.  There's really no need to wait for spring! 3.  Cook something fabulous.  Most people have at least one cookbook in their homes, and odds are, that cookbook hasn't done much more than collect dust.  Try your hand at some recipes you've never made before.  A new culinary skill can come in handy when entertaining guests as well. 4.  Make something awesome.  Try your hand at a new craft.  Candle making, terrarium building, and potpourri are all hobbies that are not only fun to try, but can add a touch of personality to your home.  Take a trip to your local craft store, and see if anything catches your interest.  If you become particularly skilled at the craft of your choosing, there's always room to make a little extra money from your endeavors. No matter what you end up trying out, keep in mind that doing something is always better than doing nothing.  Keeping your mind and body active in the winter is not only good for you, it's good for your home as well.
